Mary and her husband the late Gerard Reid established Egan-Reid Limited in the early 1990s. Since then Mary has typeset,
print-managed, edited and designed more than a thousand books for major publishers in New Zealand and overseas. Mary has always had a love of books. She started her working life as a librarian and developed a career in publishing with a focus on high-quality books, this has earned her the respect of the NZ publishing industry. In 2012 Mary joined the New Zealand Post Book Awards judging panel. Read more about Mary’s background here.
Mary is the mother of Anna and Sophia and has a son, Joshua, who lives in Perth. Mary lives in Freemans Bay with her dog Lucca and cats Dante (named after her favourite typeface) and Louis.
Anna has been in the book industry for over 12 years. She paid her way through university by illustrating for Australian publisher Elsevier and the Samoan Government. After completing her Bachelor of Arts in Art History and English at Otago University, she went travelling before coming back to start her career as a designer and typesetter. Although she had been typesetting since her late teens, from 2005 onwards she learnt all the finer points of book design from Mary Egan. From 2010–2012 she was an in-house designer at Penguin Books (NZ). She thoroughly enjoyed her time there and learnt a great deal about the collaborative process of making great books. At the end of 2012 she joined Mary and Sophia in the new family venture: Mary Egan Publishing.
Anna has been a finalist for a number of PANZ Book Design Awards and in 2012 won the Hachette New Zealand Award for Best Non-Illustrated Book.
Sophia has books in her blood and has now worked in the publishing industry for seven years.
She started as the office manager and accounts person for Egan-Reid Limited and then became the marketing assistant after the company became Pindar NZ, a role that saw her working with pricing, client relationships, marketing, buying print, project management and website maintenance, as well as single-handedly running the self publishing department.
Sophia will guide you through the book production process and manage your project from start to finish.
